[box]PERSONALITY[/box]
Though Raven gives off the impression that she is cold, emotionless and aloof, that is far from who she really is. She is someone who keeps herself protected at all costs, her walls and defenses up so high that even her closest friends have struggled to get through. This stems from her fear and knowledge of her own heritage, and even a destiny to help her demonic father destroy the world, and she is afraid that armed with that knowledge, her friends might turn on her. It's not easy for her to open up, coupled with the fact that she knows she doesn't belong anywhere and the trouble trusting anyone, and you have a teenager who spends most of her time alone than mingling with others.
Raven is all about controlling her emotions which is why she comes across as cold and without any emotion whatsoever - even her speech is mostly devoid of emotion, speaking in monotone. She displays a huge amount of control regarding her emotions, having done so when she realized her powers were directly tied with emotion, though it's not always perfect. Because of this, she also has trouble expressing herself in a more friendly manner and has trouble showing off her affections. She rarely gives comfort to her friends, the cold hard reality keeping her from sugar coating things and offering false hope - it's something she is working on but it's a work in progress for someone as cynical as she is. Despite this she can be quite a compassionate young woman.
Anger and fear are two emotions Raven does not like, at all. There are two types of anger Raven feels, the annoyance that she typically feels whenever Beast Boy makes a stupid joke or the raw anger of her more primal and demonic side. When hitting that anger point, her whole attitude shifts to someone who wants to hurt people and enjoy their suffering.
Most of the time she is silent, preferring to keep her thoughts to herself except when displaying some of her sarcastic wit in the form of dry humor. Though she keeps a lot of secrets, it's not to hurt her friends but a desire to protect them(and herself) but that doesn't mean she isn't loyal. Raven would do anything to protect her friends, even fighting battles alone just to keep them safe from harm. The Titans are more than just friends to her, they are family and the most important people in the world to her. It's why she feels back whenever she makes a comment that hurts them even if that is the last thing she wants to do and she tends to make it up in other, small ways to show how bad she feels.
At her very core she is someone who just wants to be accepted and loved.
Raven wasn't born on earth but Azarath, to an Azarathian mother and a demon father. Her mother was taken in by the Monk of Azarath after she attempted suicide when Trigon abandoned her. When she was born there was a prophecy in which she would bring about the end of the world, not something a child should ever know about. She grew up under the care of the monks of Azarath and was quite a studious individual, wanting to learn everything she could. She learned about her powers and was taught how to control them and her emotions.
When she was only fourteen did she flee to earth after sensing her father's growing power. She met the others during a battle in which, after Raven felt Starfires emotions, offered a different sort of approach to the situation rather than fighting head to head. That was how she met Robin, Beast Boy, Cyborg and Starfire and that was how the Titans were formed. Well after another battle with different enemies this time.
Though a prominent member of the Teen Titans, Raven was much of a loner during her time, thinking that the others, especially Beast Boy, disliked her. A trip into her mind helped her grow a little closer to Beast Boy and Cyborg, switching bodies with Starfire thanks to the Puppet King allowed her to get to know her a little better and vice versa. And going into Robin's mind through her empathic link to save him gave them a deeper bond of understanding. Over time Raven got closer to her friends, always ready to fight off the next evil threat no matter how big or bad they were. And they took on plenty of foes, with plenty of adventures to be had(including being trapped as a bunny rabbit!).
Life wasn't all about fighting and there were times when they simply did things as friends. Half the time Raven would sit out especially if it involved some sort of sporting activity, though she did referee, have picnics at the park or even movie night which one resulted in Raven having to confront the fact that she did feel fear, and that it was okay to feel afraid. Still, she wasn't exactly open all the time, annoyed with Beast Boy's jokes, watching as Starfire would add different condiments to her food. They were a group of misfits but they were her group of misfits.
When the new girl Terra came into their lives, Raven wasn't exactly open. Slowly Raven began to trust her, though not completely, and when Terra ended up betraying them all, she still felt incredibly hurt.
Raven's sixteenth birthday approached with a desire from the Titan for the day to end as quickly as it had come. Hoping to get through it unscathed, her wishes had been shattered as Slade appeared from the dead to give deliver a message. Runes on her body began to glow, glimpes of the future with a destroyed earth, the knowledge that she would be the one to bring about its end. Trying to keep it a secret from her friends only put them in danger, especially when Slade came back a few weeks later in order to dangle more information in their way.
An old library held information that was needed, and Raven was the key. She knew the moment she walked in, with the same runes from her birthday re-appearing on her form. Knowing she could not be in there, she left the others to find any information, hoping that by removing herself they would be in less danger. While she could no longer meditate, since the encounter with Slade had caused her to see glimpes of the future, she instead chose another plan of action.
In order to protect her friends, the earth and try and stop the prophecy from happening, Raven went through a portal to her homeworld, Azarath. Greeted with silence upon her arrival, she soon saw the figure of her mother who told her that the knowledge of her birth was absolute and there would be no stopping the prophecy and that it was too late for earth much like it was too late for Azarath - the illusion was broken and the broken and destroyed Azarath lay in ruins. Returning home, Raven saved the rest of the Titans from Slade's attack and knowing he wouldn't attack her, since she was the gem that would be needed for the prophecy, Slade tried to leave, yet Raven wasn't done and gave him a message to give to his master and Raven's father.
Back home Raven did the one thing she always had trouble doing. Opening up, letting the others in. Though Raven believed there was nothing that could change it, the other Titans still tried. And when the day came, Raven was shocked to see all they had done but still, she gave into the despair that her father sent through to her mind. Giving her friends some of her power and protection, Raven went to fulfill her destiny and to bring Trigon to earth. In doing so, she didn't die but regressed to a child in white robes rather than the usual purple. With the Titans keeping Trigon occupied, Robin went to find Raven who had lost all hope even when Robin kept believing in her. When all seemed lost, Raven transformed back to her teenage self. The White Raven defeated Trigon and reverted the world back to the way it was before Trigon arrived.
Raven is well versed in physical fighting even if she isn't the more proficient fighter, relying on her powers more than hand-to-hand combat. Still, she can fight physically if needed because she cannot always rely on her powers in battle. Raven also knows several languages, and is fluent in all of them, including Azaranian, English, German, Latin, Romanian, Ancient Sumerian, and Sanskrit.
Special Abilities
Raven has an impressive arsenal of abilities that have a dark aura to them. This is her energy, and depending on her emotional state at the time determines the color of her energy. Black is the typical color, with red and white being alternatives. All her abilities are based on her emotions, with the more emotion she feels, the more energy she unleashes which is not a good thing - such forces of energy leave her weakened and even unconscious.
Astral Projection/Soul Self: Raven can use astral projection to split her spirit from her body; this is called her soul self and is what most her abilities is derived from. Though her soul self can appear as a ghost of her own human form, most of the time it will appear as a large black raven. She has immense control over her soul self, able to change shape and size as well as changing her own physical appearance for a time(such as increasing her size). She is also able to attack in her soul self as well as teleport through solid objects by having her soul self envelop her completely.
Levitation: by using her telekinesis she is able to levitate off the ground as well as use it to fly over distances(up to about eight hours before exhaustion sets in). Unlike her other abilities, there is no visible energy to indicate she is using her power.
Telekinesis: it's easy to tell when Raven is using her telekinesis on something as her soul self merges with those objects before being hurled at the enemy or simply picked up and tossed aside, displaying the dark aura that makes up most of her visible power use. With this power she is able to lift up to several tonnes, though anymore than that is a strain. She is also able to use her telekinesis in a few other sub categories of abilities such as:
Constructs: by changing the shape of her soul self, Raven is able to create plenty of objects in order to better enable her to fight or defend. This includes projectiles to aim at the enemy, walls to protect from incoming attacks and plenty of other objects that she can think of in the heat of the battle.
Force fields: created by her dark energy itself, Raven is able to summon a powerful dome shaped shield to cover herself and nearby allies(so long as they are standing with her). This takes up a lot of energy and concentration and is rarely used unless a powerful attack is coming her way.
Teleportation: with her soul self, she can use that to move herself, or surround up to four people, and teleport short distances(up to 4km in one burst). Obviously she cannot directly teleport to other towns.
Healing: There are two ways Raven can use her healing ability. She can heal herself by meditating and becoming emotionally calm while in the trance or she can heal others by inducing rapid healing in their bodies - this requires her to absorb their pain into her own form.
Empathy: Raven can only feel the emotions of others in brief bursts so long as she is calm herself. With a close connection to someone, ie a close friend, she is also able to use that empathy to guide her with her soul self should they ever be lost or kidnapped. Though like with everything else relating to her empathy, this requires her to be calm - any spikes of high emotion and she'll lose the connection.
The White Raven: Raven's most powerful and pure form. This symbolizes her purity as well as being incredibly powerful due to the amount of energy used to become the White Raven. She cannot become the White Raven all the time as she needs to be in harmony with herself before she can 'ascend' to this form. When she leaves this form she is exhausted and needs about a week of actual rest to get her strength back. As derived by the name, her powers are white rather than black.
Magic: She rarely practices magic since coming to earth but she can cast a wide variety of spells and rituals, using mythical items and talismans and she makes her own potions to aid her. From her studies back in Azarath, Raven has an indepth knowledge of the arcane to help her whenver she does practice magic.
Spell-casting: Raven is able to cast a wide variety of spells, most of which need her to be verbal though she has been learning to cast them without speaking a word. This requires concentration and, in the case of verbal spells she needs to complete the sentence otherwise it doesn't work. It also feeds off her energy so the more powerful a spell is, the more energy it uses and the weaker she is once it's completed.
Emotions: Raven's powers are tied directly to her emotions, meaning the more she feels, the more energy she unleashes and the more of a drain it is on her very being. Anger is also one emotion that is extremely dangerous for this young Titan to feel as she will lose control when angered, becoming more demonic in appearance and personality until she snaps out of it. As powerful as her demonic side is, it can also corrupt her, removing all traces of her humanity. Fear is also another dangerous emotion, though instead of her losing control it makes her unable to use her powers should she deny the fact she is afraid.
Mantra: Not only is the phrase Azarath Metrion Zinthos a mantra for when she is meditating but it's also her main incantation for almost everything relating to her powers - most notably their activation as the moment she speaks the words, her black aura appears with whatever power she is currently utilizing. Rendering her silent, by putting something over her mouth is removing her ability to speak will render Raven virtually powerless as it severs her connection with her powers. She is able to use some of her abilities without speaking the words though they generally have less omph. Basically, the more powerful she wants her attacks to be, she will utter the words.
Mortal: yes she is half demon, no she isn't immortal. She can get sick, she can be affected by magicks and even her own emotions.
Healing: Raven can only heal broken bones, sprains and cuts. She cannot heal any illnesses nor bring the dead back to life. As for her healing trance, should she be distracted or be unable to remain calm then it won't work - not to mention while in that zone, she is completely vulnerable to attacks as she cannot defend herself, nor use her powers, until she is out of the zone.
